Disable mature visibility, not just blurring
- In the Android app, open Settings and look under View Options for Show NSFW Content (I’m over 18). Turn it off.
- On reddit.com, open Settings → Preferences and turn Show mature (18+) content off.
- If you allow mature content, the separate blur option can conceal tagged media until opened. That does not remove adult posts entirely.
Reddit documents saved preferences as applying across platforms. Labels and account/region requirements can differ. The official source explains enabling visibility; the steps here use the off state for the opposite goal.

Mute unwanted communities
In the app, open a community’s overflow menu and choose Mute r/[community name]. A recommendation’s Show fewer posts like this action can offer an additional mute choice. This addresses that community in covered feeds, not every image in every other community.
Review subscriptions separately if you joined the source. A narrow change such as muting one source may be enough; a broad visual filter is not always necessary.

Why untagged images can get through
A label-based preference cannot be assumed to recognize an image that never received the relevant label. Cross-posts, misleading titles and mixed-content communities also make a community choice different from an image preference.
If you believe content needs a label or violates rules, use the relevant reporting flow rather than reopening it repeatedly. Correcting a platform label, avoiding a community and covering visible content on your device are different actions.
NSFW does not always mean sexual
A workplace-suitability warning can cover more than nudity or sex. If you want to avoid gore, offensive language or difficult discussion topics, do not assume a sexual-content filter covers them. Retain the platform’s broader controls when they fit your aim.
Where ReelShield fits on Reddit
ReelShield offers another approach on supported Android 14+ ARM64 devices. Choose protected apps and Explicit nudity or Suggestive content filtering; the app calls the latter “Suggestive & dating content”. It analyses visible content on-device and covers selected unwanted visuals when detected. Tested apps include Instagram, Reddit and TikTok; support is not universal.
You enable Accessibility access yourself. Screen images used for protection are not uploaded to ReelShield servers. No ReelShield account or ads. The Privacy Policy explains local activity, technical metadata and Google Play purchases.
ReelShield does not change Reddit labels, delete posts or promise every NSFW category. It is a possible extra visual layer for its selected filters on supported surfaces. Compare social-app filtering with website blocking to see what that adds.
Automated filtering can hide normal content or miss unwanted content. A cover appears only after content reaches the screen and is detected, so this is not a guarantee of zero exposure. Native controls and your own account choices still matter.
Check without reopening unwanted media
Return to your ordinary feed after saving settings. Distinguish posts that have disappeared from media that remains but is blurred. If an unwanted source persists, check whether it is a different community, a direct visit or an unsaved preference. A single example does not prove a universal failure or fix.
Private screenshots are not needed to read these guides. ReelShield support covers setup questions; protection analysis itself stays on-device.
Common questions
Does Blur NSFW hide the post? It is a reveal-on-open media treatment, not disabling mature-content visibility.
Can all untagged NSFW be blocked? No guarantee is made, and the term covers categories beyond ReelShield’s two filters.
Does ReelShield cover every Reddit surface? No. Device/app compatibility varies; secure surfaces can be unavailable.
